Sandbags Body Bags is an ongoing project that envisions sandbags as bodies, evoking the stark reality of flooding, erosion, and rising oceans due to climate chaos and other human-driven phenomena.
The intention for this endurance performance and art installation is to foster awareness of the fundamental precariousness of our cities in the face of climate chaos. To be jolting, to leave an impression that inspires conversations around mitigation and adaptation — ultimately avoiding the outcome that the Sandbags Body Bags project implies. The video documentation on this page is from The Performance Arcade which took place in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, Aotearoa/New Zealand in February 2024.
Below you can watch a video with commentary about the process of this performance and installation, as well videos of one full performance cycle and the installation after severe weather intervention.
Additional installation and performances of Sandbags Body Bags took place as part of let me hold you as you disappear at Laconia Gallery in Boston in January 2024.
